Day one of the DELL World event has come and gone and what a day it was! Starting off slow after a lengthy trip from Buffalo through New York’s JFK airport and battling the weather issues there, we finally got into Austin and in our hotel room at about 2 AM.
During day one I accomplished my first goal of the DELL event, get reconnected in the PartnerDirect community. Over 650 partners attended a day long event put on by the PartnerDirect team at DELL. During the day I connected with Greg Davis, long time leader of PartnerDirect, celebrating 5 years. Wow, has it really been 5 years of PartnerDirect?
I was fortunate to meet some very key players at DELL on Tuesday. I learned about the investment DELL made in Make Technologies, a Vancouver-based organization who was recently acquired by DELL to provide services around legacy applications and connecting aging systems with newer technologies. Not much of a small business service, but important.
I also had a chance to sit down with one of the key product marketing folks at DELL SonicWALL and learn more about what is happening in that world. SonicWALL has always been a great company and now it is even better with the DELL community supporting the great things they are doing. I am hoping to get more one-on-one time with the SonicWALL folks over the next few days.
Lastly, I sat in on a great panel with Michael Dell and many of the Dell leadership to learn about what is happening with Dell as a company. Lots of great stuff here as well. To sum it up quickly, DELL is taking their once product based business and creating a complete end-to-end organization that focuses on everything a business needs from IT. According to Michael Dell, when I asked him about the opportunity in the channel, he told me that Dell fully intends to bring the channel along for the ride and the channel is important to Dell’s overall strategy.
Like I mentioned in the past, DELL is a very strategic partner to have in your IT business, but you need to work with them. Like any relationship, if you don’t put in the effort, it will fail…this one needs your effort and theirs to succeed. DELL is a very approachable organization and they are always looking for great partners.
